You go to the doctor with headaches that will not leave, a stomach that tightens before every important day, a fatigue that sleep does not relieve. The tests come back clean, and you leave more confused: "Then what is wrong with me?" The truth is that anxiety does not stay only in the mind. It speaks through the body. And when you hear "it is psychosomatic", that does not mean you are imagining it or that "it is all in your head". The pain is entirely real; its starting point is simply not where you are looking.
Why anxiety hurts in the body
Body and mind are not two separate things; they are one system. When the brain perceives a threat, real or imagined, the nervous system prepares for action: the heart beats faster, the muscles tighten, digestion slows, breathing turns shallow. This is useful for a few minutes, when there is genuine danger. The problem is when the alarm never switches off. Chronic stress keeps the body on constant alert, and this ongoing tension, over time, has a cost: tension headaches, stomach troubles, muscle pain, insomnia, exhaustion.
Common forms it takes
- Tightness or heaviness in the chest, a sense that you cannot get enough air.
- Stomach issues: nausea, a "knot", irritable bowel, cramps.
- Headaches and tightness in the neck and shoulders.
- Fatigue that sleep does not clear, dizziness, numbness.
- Sleep disturbance, either difficulty falling asleep or frequent waking.
The medical picture first
We always check medically first whatever is needed. The body deserves seriousness, and no symptom should be hastily dismissed as "just anxiety". But when organic causes have been ruled out or managed and the symptoms persist, it is worth looking at the other side too: what weighs on you, what you hold in, which tension you carry that cannot find words. Often the body says what you cannot yet say.
The symptom is not the enemy; it is a messenger. It deserves to be heard before it is sent away.
The vicious cycle of worry
There is a further trap. When a physical symptom frightens us, we begin to monitor it constantly, to fear what it means, to check our body every few minutes. This worry raises the anxiety, which in turn intensifies the symptom. So a vicious cycle forms: fear, tension, more symptom, more fear. Therapy helps precisely to break this cycle.
How it eases
Work with psychosomatic symptoms moves on two levels at once. On one hand, we learn to regulate the nervous system in the here and now: slow breathing, relaxation, contact with the body, small habits that give the organism the message that it is safe. On the other, we look deeper: what this anxiety means, where it comes from, which needs or conflicts it expresses. When the feeling finds words and room, the body often no longer needs to shout so loudly.
You are not alone in this
If you have long been living with symptoms that frighten and tire you, you deserve support, not the message that "there is nothing wrong with you". At "thestherapy", based in Thessaloniki, we work with anxiety and its physical expressions, in person and online, in Greek and in English, always alongside medical care where it is needed. Slowly, the body learns to relax again.
