Θυμός: ένα συναίσθημα που μεταφέρει πληροφορία

Θυμός: ένα συναίσθημα που μεταφέρει πληροφορία

Anger has a bad reputation. From an early age we learned to see it as something "bad", a feeling to suppress, hide or be ashamed of. And yet anger, like every emotion, did not arrive by accident. It carries information, and if you learn to listen to it, it can become a valuable ally rather than an inner enemy that frightens you.

What your anger is trying to tell you

Anger is often a guard. It appears when something important is at stake: a boundary that was crossed, an injustice you cannot bear, a need ignored for too long, a value that was trampled. Behind anger there is almost always something more vulnerable: hurt, fear, disappointment or the sense of not being seen. When you ask "what is this anger protecting?", you begin to understand it instead of merely fearing or condemning it.

The problem is not the anger

The problem is rarely the feeling itself. It is what we do with it. There are two common traps:

  • Suppression. When we choke it down, anger does not disappear, it leaks out sideways: as sarcasm, passive aggression, cold withdrawal or physical symptoms such as a clenched jaw, headaches and tension.
  • Explosion. When it overflows uncontrollably, it wounds people we love and then leaves behind guilt and shame, which in turn feed fresh tension.

In both cases the message of the anger goes unheard, it simply gets displaced and returns later, stronger.

The difference between feeling and acting

There is a crucial distance between feeling anger and acting from anger. Feeling it is always legitimate, it is human. How you act is a choice, even if in the moment it does not seem so. Between the trigger and the reaction there is a small space. In that space lies your freedom, and that space grows with practice.

How to work with it

The work is not to "stop getting angry". That is neither possible nor healthy. It is to recognise anger early, while it is still an irritation and not yet a fire. To notice the bodily signs, the heat, the tightening, the quickening, and to read them as an early warning. To ask what exactly was stepped on inside you. And then to express it in a way that can be heard, speaking about your own experience instead of blaming.

Practical steps in the moment

  • Take a pause before reacting, even a few seconds of slow breathing.
  • Name the feeling: "I am angry right now", instead of silently acting it out.
  • Speak in the first person: "I feel" and "I need", instead of "you always".
  • If the intensity is too high, ask for a break and return when you have calmed.
Anger that is understood rarely needs to become an explosion.

How therapy helps

In therapy we can look together at what lies beneath your anger, which old stories feed it, and which boundaries are finally asking to be set. If your anger frightens you, if you feel you explode and then regret it, or if on the contrary you have buried it so deep that you no longer feel it, it is worth giving it space. At thestherapy, in Thessaloniki or online, we work with it without moralising and without rushing. Anger is not your enemy. It is often the way your own self makes sure you do not forget what matters to you.
